  • 20 April 1792- James’s father, Grandison Fairchild, is born. (book intro) becomes a farmer and teacher (James’ student file).
  • 29 November 1795 -James’s mother, Nancy Harris, is born.  (book intro) becomes a teacher (James’ student file).
  • 25 November 1817- James Harris Fairchild is born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. (book intro)
  • 1818- the Fairchilds move to Brownhelm, Ohio in the Western Reserve. (book intro)
  • 22 November 1819- Mary Fletcher Kellogg is born in Ashville, N. Y. She soon moved to Jamestown, NY. (Mary’s student file).
  • 1833- Oberlin College was Founded (James’ student file).
  • 7 May 1834- James and his brother Henry move to Oberlin from Elyria (where they’d been staying for the past two years)(book intro) James was 14 when he attended Elyria high school (James’ student file).
  • Fall, 1834- James and Henry enter Oberlin College’s first freshman class, along with two other men. (book intro)
  • 1835- John Morgan and the other Lane Rebels join the College faculty. (book timeline).
  • Fall, 1835- Mary Kellogg arrives in Oberlin from Jamestown NY. (book intro) her younger brother, Charles Augustus comes with her to study (Mary’s student file). Mary specifically enrolls to study greek (book timeline).
  • 1836- several young women decided they want to embark on the Classical Course (they started studying at the Preparatory Dep. first, and/or ladies department first). (book intro)
  • Spring, 1836- Mary Kellogg goes with the Oberlin colony to the Burrell School in Sheffield (Mary’s student file).
  • 1837- four women, including Kellogg, entered the Classical Course at Oberlin. (book intro)

  • July, 1838- Mary Kellogg, newly engaged to James, leaves Oberlin to move with her family to Minden, Louisiana. (book intro) They stay the first winter in Cincinnati (Mary’s student file)
  • Summer, 1839- Mary Kellogg and her family leave Cincinnati and move to Minden Louisiana in the northwest of the state. (Mary’s student file).
  • winter, 1840-1841- James obtains his preaching license from the Lorain Presbytery, and preaches in Palmyra, Michigan. (book intro)
  • 1841- James graduates from Oberlin Theological Seminary (James’ student file).
  • March, 1841- James becomes a Professor of Languages at Oberlin (first temporary, then permanent). (book intro)
  • 24 August 1841-  James is ordained by the Lorain County Congregational Association (James’ student file).
  • 29 November 1841- James Harris Fairchild and Mary Fletcher Kellogg marry at Mary’s home in Louisiana. The couple then returned to Oberlin where they lived for the remainder of their lives (Mary’s student file).
  • 3 November 1842- daughter Lucy Kellogg Fletcher (Mrs. Carlos A. Kenaston) is born. (James’ student file).
  • 1844- James’ sister Emily Frances Fairchild graduates from Oberlin College with an A.B. (James’ student file).

  • 1847- James is transferred to the professorship of Mathematics (James’ student file).
  • 1847- James’ sister Emily Frances received her A.M. degree, becoming possibly the first woman in the US to attain that degree. (James’ student file).
  • 1848- daughter Catherine Cooley Fairchild is born. enrolled in Oberlin’s literary degree program from 1868-70. (James’ student file).
  • 1848- James received his A.M. from Oberlin College.  (James’ student file).
  • 1849- James has a few months leave to visit eastern colleges, this was his only graduate study (James’ student file).
  • 24 September 1851- daughter Alice Cowles Fairchild born (James’ student file).

  • 22 January 1857- daughter Grace Augusta Fairchild born (James’ student file).
  • 1858- James was appointed associate Professor of Moral Philosophy and began teaching theology in the seminary and served as faculty chairman for the administration (James’ student file).
